PNBABCKBWHO_ALL (PNBABCKBWHO_ALL)
Who performed baby's checkup before discharge from place of delivery

PNBABCKBWHO_ALL variables are 4-digit variables.

Description

For women who gave birth in the five years before the survey, and whose child had a health check before discharge from the place of delivery, PNBABCKBWHO_ALL reports who conducted the child's health check (for a recent birth).

PNBABCKBWHO_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (PNBABCKBWHO_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., PNBABCKBWHO_02, PNBABCKBWHO_03, PNBABCKBWHO_04, PNBABCKBWHO_05, and PNBABCKBWHO_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If PNBABCKBWHO_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

This variable differs from the similar variable PNBABCKWHO_ALL in that PNBABCKBWHO_ALL is specifically about checkups before discharge from a medical facility, whereas PNBABCKWHO_ALL reports who conducted the postpartum health check irrespective of discharge from a medical facility.

The related variable PNBABCKDISWHO_ALL reports who conducted the child's health check after discharge from a medical facility.

Comparability

PNBABCKBWHO_ALL has no comparability problems.

The harmonized coding categories in the IPUMS-DHS variable PNBABCKBWHO_ALL reflect the major and minor categories in the related DHS variable PNBABCKWHO_ALL. The major categories are:

  • 1000: Health professionals
  • 2000: Other person

The second, third, and fourth digits of PNBABCKBWHO_ALL's codes distinguish between specific locations and provide detail present in only some samples.

When response categories include non-standard groupings, IPUMS-DHS codes those groupings as a sub-category under the most qualified of the group (e.g., "Doctor/clinical officer" (code "1130") is a sub-category of "Doctor" (code "1100")).

Comparability - Standard DHS

PNBABCKBWHO_ALL is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS women's questionnaire.
